Would You Cry?

About 2 months ago I got a cough. Nothing to write home about, I just thought it was an infection. Simple run of antibiotics and I’d be good as new, right? Wrong. Two months later, the worst of it is gone, but I still have coughing fits and a tickle. I’ve been told it’s allergies, but the medication I’ve tried doesn’t help.

About 4 years ago I started getting stomach aches all the time. I woke up nauseated but not enough to “get sick”. I lived on Saltines for a good month. I lost weight, but it wasn’t healthy… and it wasn’t fun. We discovered my stomach doesn’t digest at the same speed as “normal” people and the problem escalates when I’m stressed. The medication they gave me doesn’t help, so I just have to eat smaller portions when it’s “acting up”.

About a year ago my Mom’s friend couldn’t lose weight, no matter how hard she tried. She wasn’t overweight by any means, but had about 10 lbs she gained and could not lose. She exercised and dieted but nothing worked.

I never really would have imagined all these things could be related. However, recently (like 2 years) I’ve learned and heard about a lot people solving similar health issues by avoiding certain foods. Sure, if you have a cough you shouldn’t be eating tons of dairy. Or, if your having stomach problems try eating BRAT – Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. Lots of people have heard that.

Would you think these things could be caused and solved based on food allergies? My Mom’s friend had a blood test to determine which foods she was allergic to and lost the extra weight by avoiding those foods. A friend of mine had a similar cough and treated it by avoiding foods.

A couple weeks ago I went to the Dr my Mom’s friend saw and last week I took a blood test to determine my food allergies. I’m hoping (hard) that this test will tell me which foods I should avoid and by avoid those food my cough will get better, my stomach wont bother me as much and, heck, I might loose a little weight.

It takes a couple weeks to get the test results back, so I’ve been compiling a list of foods I think I could and could not give up….

Foods I would cry if I had to give up…

ginger

tomatoes
wineI know some are more obvious and others, like the ginger, not so much… what food would you cry over finding out your were allergic to?

Oh no! I hope the results come back ok. Giving up wine would be...well, I wouldn't do it. Nope. I'll suffer, thank you very much. I had a dairy allergy for a few years but grew out of it. Cheese would be hard to give up. But the big one is gluten. I've tried some gluten-free food and it is NOT for me.

Thank you Em!
I forgot dairy, I'd be pretty crushed if I couldn't eat anymore dairy... although, I think I'd lose a TON of weight haha
I was allergic to milk when I was born, but also grew out of it... weird.

Wine would be one of mine too! And sushi, cheese, apples, chocolate... There's a lot I can't live without.

I hope this fixes your health problems!

I couldn't live without CHEESE!!!!!

I have PCOS and lost a TON of weight when I cut out sugar (except from fruits, etc) and white flour (basically got rid of processed carbs) and lost 20 pounds in a month. Since PCOS ties into insulin, that diet is PERFECT for me.

Too bad it's way too hard to stick to.

i'd seriously cry if i could no longer have dairy... so many things i'd miss out on.

I hope the test helps with the cough.

Dairy for sure! And Chocolate, Peanut butter, and of COURSE wine! Other than that, losing any of the major staples (rice, bread, potatoes) would be a pain too. I hope your tests come back OK!!

I hope they find out that it is a food allergie and that the ones you are allergic to are ones you can live without. And I hope you're doing well. Im a philly girl and I love soft pretzels and and kind of pretzel so that would be sad if I couldnt eat them.

Sometimes after I eat apples I get a little tingle in my mouth and it itches...so sometimes I wonder if Im allergic to them!

Oh Ali I hope you get an explanation (a bearable one) soon and that it's an easy fix for your symptoms. No good being in the dark about that stuff. One of my biggest fears is being diagnosed with something that would forbid me from eating gluten. I can't imagine life without it!

Very interesting! Certain foods are "linked" to certain common allergens, for instance I was told that one common allergen (cant remember which) often makes people averse to tomatoes. I don't 100% trust the allergy tests, so if they told me I was allergic to foods I probably would ignore it. I'm sure the tests you took are different from the standard "prick" test they give you to determine what you're allergic to, because the results of that test are almost instant, but I was told last time I was tested that I was "horribly" allergic to horses. I have been riding almost literally my entire life (I was on a horse before age one), and I have never EVER had a reaction to horses. Hence my distrust of allergy doctors. Anywho, I would cry if they told me I was allergic to chocolate, but I really doubt I'd give it up. Chocolate is my bestie.

I have a minor allergic reaction to alcohol... I still drink it. :)

I'd have a very difficult time being told I was allergic to bacon and/or coffee.

Thank you all for your concern, you're all so sweet :)
I have to agree that dairy would probably also make me cry, but like I said to Em not eating dairy would probably drop the lbs haha.

@MayLove - I've never had a scratch test, but my sister did when she was in elementary school and has since grown out of all those allergies. I took a blood test that gets sent away to a lab :)

@D Marie - My sister has the same reaction to walnuts, so we've just assumed she's allergic. The itchy painful mouth is all that happens though, too.

I've always been allergic to chocolate, nuts, berries, coffee (it's related to chocolate), and raw (AKA uncooked) pineapples, oranges and grapefruits (even though I'm OK with lemons and limes).

I think the hardest thing for me would be to give up dairy, eggs, or gluten. I can live without cane sugar, apples, corn, or any number of other allergies that family/friends have, but I don't think I could easily learn to cook without dairy, gluten, or eggs.
